Purpose : To determine the prevalence of dry eye disease among middle-aged people based on the questionnaire.
Methods : The survey was conducted online using Google forms. Dry eye disease was assessed using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire. According to the OSDI score, dry eye was classified as normal (0~12), mild (13~22), moderate (23~32), and severe (33~100).
Results : Of 194 middle-aged respondents, the diagnosis of dry eye through OSDI was normal in 99 (51.0%), 58 (29.9%) were mild, and 20 (10.3%) were moderate and 17 (8.8%) were severe. Factors related to dry eye in middle-aged were female (p=0.002), history of clinically diagnosed dry eye (p<0.001), self-awareness of the dry eye (p=0.001), history of medication (p=0.049), and continuous use of the smartphone for more than 1 hour (p=0.032).
Conclusion : Prevalence of dry eye disease was considered high at 49.0% among 194 middle-aged people. Therefore, it is considered necessary to improve lifestyle and manage the risk factors to prevent dry eye disease.
